I’m a Calgarian living in Calgary’s south east with Dawna and our three kids aged 5, 7, and 9. Two of our kids are in CBE programs, one is home schooled this year. I’ve spent my entire life in Alberta and went through Edmonton’s public schools which I am thankful for. I’m involved in a number of community organizations throughout Calgary and Alberta and believe the role of leadership is to listen and find the resources that front line professionals need to deliver on their promises well.
Statement of beliefs
Calgary's Board of Education has a rich history, bringing the skills students need to succeed for over a hundred years through a long line of passionate and caring educators. Society has changed but the need of our educators has only become more necessary. Calgary schools care for ~20% of the cities population on any given day and the expectations of what schools and teachers are asked to deliver has wildly expanded. The school board needs to take account of what it is being asked to deliver, focus professional teachers on educating with the funds provided by Alberta Education and resource the other expectations from other provincial and federal department budgets. Teachers are being asked to do too much.
Doing everything possible to prepare professional teachers for the new curriculum. Its coming.
Reaching out beyond Alberta Education for significantly more resources
A whole lot of navel gazing. Covid has changed schools forever. What does CBE need be 20y out?
Views on funding
Teachers play a significant role in the lives of students for each of the 13 years students progress. Its not limited to the 13 years but the basis of who they are for the rest of their lives. Teachers are being asked to do too much as in addition to being educators of curriculum, they're also asked to be care-givers, medical professionals, phycologists, parents in addition to often feeding and clothing the kids in their classes. Its not fair to teachers. Its also not fair to the Ministry of Education. In both cases, they're asked to do more then their mandate.
We need the provincial and federal governments to step up with additional funding beyond education funding. During any given school day in Calgary, ~20% of Calgary's population is in a K-12 school. Funding must represent that. Lets see more direct funding from Health Canada, Heritage Canada as well as AHS, Alberta Transportation, Social Services and others. The significance of school in our society demands it.
How learning conditions can be improved
We need to give teachers the freedom to focus on what they're passionate about - educating students. The "ask" of teachers has grown too broad and significantly more resources must be provided to institutions that are schools to fund the greater role they have grown to serve. Professional teachers have been placed in impossible situations and more support must be given so they can deliver well in an environment they can succeed in.
How trustees and school boards can best support teachers
Get out of the way and let professional teachers teach!
Views on recently released draft curriculum
It is a significant change from previous curriculums and will put excessive additional work load on educators to implement. The school board is doing a terrible job of providing the necessary resources to make the transition successfully for teachers and students. Unless things change quickly, it will be more of disaster than it needs to be.
There are portions of the curriculum that are not suitable. Teachers know what those are. It will take years to sort that out but it will get sorted out albeit more effort on the parts of all of us then there needs to be.
How to encourage and facilitate the calls to action as outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
The 20th century is filled with atrocities this generation of Canadians needs to be made aware of. As a nation of immigrants most of our ancestors fled their homelands because of racism, tyranny and hatred. Understanding the racism, tyranny and hatred that the First Nations peoples also experienced is a first step in reconciliation and forgiveness for the attitudes of the past.Visit website
