Leah Floyd

I bring over 20 years of experience as an educator and instructional leader, combined with the perspective of a parent with children in Elk Island Public Schools. I have taught in three school divisions and worked alongside students, families, and staff to create supportive learning environments. I am deeply committed to public education and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed.

Statement of beliefs

I believe public education is the foundation of strong communities. Every child deserves safe, inclusive schools where they can learn, grow, and thrive. Trustees must listen to families, work with communities, and make decisions that put students first. My priorities reflect these beliefs. Supportive Schools provide the resources, specialized programming, and staff every student needs. Engaged Communities ensure families and local partners help shape learning experiences. Bright Futures prepare students for tomorrow through responsive programming, career pathways, and responsible, student-focused decision-making.

Priority areas

  1. Supportive Schools: Students first budgeting, expanded opportunities, and safe schools.

  2. Engaged Communities: Parent engagement, community connections, and stable leadership.

  3. Bright Futures: Long-term stability, experienced educators, and post-secondary success.

Views on funding

Education funding must be stable, predictable, and responsive to the needs of students and communities. Current funding challenges create barriers to programming, staffing, and specialized supports. School boards play a critical role in advocating for adequate funding, ensuring resources are directed to classrooms, and making decisions that reflect local priorities. As a trustee, I will work to ensure every dollar supports student learning and well-being.

How learning conditions can be improved

Learning conditions improve when students feel supported and have access to the resources they need. This means manageable class sizes, adequate staffing, access to specialized programming, and safe learning environments. Listening to students, families, and staff is also essential. Trustees must act on feedback to ensure schools remain responsive, inclusive, and welcoming.

How trustees and school boards can best support teachers

Trustees support teachers by ensuring they have the resources, professional development, and manageable workloads needed to focus on teaching and student success. This includes advocating for fair funding and fostering environments where teachers feel valued and respected. Listening to educators’ voices is critical. Trustees must engage with teachers as partners in creating supportive schools and bright futures for students.

Views on the new K-6 curriculum

Curriculum should prepare students for the future and be developmentally appropriate, evidence-based, and inclusive. The new K–6 curriculum has raised concerns among educators and families about its content, implementation timeline, and resource availability. Trustees should advocate for meaningful consultation with educators, parents, and communities to ensure curriculum meets diverse student needs and reflects best practices in education.
