Views on funding
I believe that funding in Alberta needs to be more transparent. For example, if the government grants money to the school board for staff, then the school board should account for number of teachers, support staff, and administration. There has to be more detail in where the money is going so that the government can account for the school board needs.
How learning conditions can be improved
Learning conditions in schools could be improved by smaller classroom sizes and/or hiring a general EA in each classroom. This would help in learning and relieve staff from daily stress. This would also help with safety and the kids that are falling between the cracks. Then if there is a student with more needs that require one on one and EA with special needs requirements should be hired for individual students.
How trustees and school boards can best support teachers
Trustees and school boards, best support teachers by listening and supporting their needs. We must trust teachers have the professional needs for their classroom and students at all times. Teachers are professionals that have taken 4+ years of education and we value their knowledge and experience.
Views on the new K-6 curriculum
My view on the K to six curriculum needs to have input by the teachers. I also think that Alberta curriculum should have something in place for special needs students. For example, from K- 6, the students should learn ABC’s, 123, their name, phone number, address, and birthday. From grade 7 to 9 student students should learn social skills, for example, how to make friends, talking to adults, etc. From 10 to 12 they should learn daily skills for example, washing tables, washing dishes, washing clothes, making beds, cooking, etc. This would be done individually, if possible for the student to learn, but it should be introduced anyways.
